How Blair Witkowski Is Using AI to Help North Carolina Contractors Get Found and Trusted
Interview with Blair Witkowski, Founder of the North Carolina Contractors Network
We sat down with Blair Witkowski, founder of Charlotte SEO Experts and the North Carolina Contractors Network, to talk about artificial intelligence, trust in online search, and why he believes North Carolina contractors need long term authority assets instead of short term lead platforms. As the creator of multiple successful industry directories, including Garage Door Galaxy, Blair brings a grounded and practical perspective to how AI can be used responsibly to help local businesses get found and chosen.
Charlotte Life: Blair, AI is everywhere right now, and for many business owners, it feels overwhelming. You have taken a different approach by focusing on trust and infrastructure rather than hype. Why?
Blair Witkowski: Because technology does not fix broken systems, it amplifies them. If trust is not built into the foundation, AI just accelerates the problems. Everything I have built, including the North Carolina Contractors Network, starts with a simple goal: help real businesses build real authority that lasts. AI is a tool in that process, not the centerpiece.
Charlotte Life: You launched the North Carolina Contractors Network at a time when getting new clients feels harder than ever. What prompted it?
Blair Witkowski: I saw how difficult client acquisition has become for contractors. Ads are more expensive, marketing platforms are more complex, and most business owners simply cannot manage SEO, PPC, websites, and content on their own anymore. Because we work in SEO and PPC, I see those pain points up close every day. Contractors were being pushed into systems they do not control just to stay visible. I launched the North Carolina Contractors Network as a way to give them something they could own, a long term authority asset instead of another short term lead source.
Charlotte Life: There are already a lot of contractor platforms out there. What makes this one different?
Blair Witkowski: Most platforms are built to sell leads. Ours is built to help homeowners make better decisions. The network is free and open to contractors across North Carolina. We do offer paid options, but the foundation is accessibility and transparency. Instead of ranking contractors by ad spend, we focus on presenting real providers clearly in their local markets so homeowners can understand who they are hiring. When you build for homeowners first, trust follows naturally for contractors.
Charlotte Life: You have successfully built directories before, including Garage Door Galaxy. How did that experience influence this project?
Blair Witkowski: Garage Door Galaxy was the proof of concept. It grew into one of the largest independent garage door contractor directories in the country because it was built around real businesses, real experience, and real structure. That success showed me that directories do not have to exploit contractors to work. They can be long term trust assets that benefit everyone involved. The North Carolina Contractors Network is built on those lessons, expanded to serve more trades and communities statewide.
Charlotte Life: AI plays a role in the network, but you are careful about how it is used. Can you explain that?
Blair Witkowski: AI does not create credibility; it surfaces it. We use AI to analyze public signals like reviews, websites, Facebook pages, social profiles, and platforms like Nextdoor. That helps us identify legitimate contractors and understand how they already appear in search and AI driven results. We also use a proprietary AI visibility checker to see how contractors show up in top AI questions and searches. AI never decides who is trustworthy. It organizes and evaluates real world information that already exists, and every meaningful output is reviewed by humans who understand the local market.
Charlotte Life: A lot of people worry about whether AI can be trusted. Where does the information come from?
Blair Witkowski: AI works by recognizing patterns from large datasets, typically a mix of publicly available information, licensed data, and human created content. It is not pulling from private customer records or making decisions on its own. That is why input matters so much. If you feed AI vague or inaccurate information, you get generic results. When you train it with real services, real locations, and real experience, it becomes a powerful assistant instead of a liability.
Charlotte Life: How does this ultimately help contractors?
Blair Witkowski: Contractors do not need more chaos, they need clarity. The directory helps them build long term authority by consistently telling search engines and AI systems who they are, what they do, and where they do it. That authority compounds over time. It does not disappear when ad budgets stop. At the same time, homeowners gain confidence that they are choosing from real, established providers instead of whoever paid for placement that week.
Charlotte Life: For contractors who feel overwhelmed by AI and marketing, what is your advice?
Blair Witkowski: Strip it back to the basics. At the end of the day, search engines need to understand three things: who you are, what you do, and where you do it. If you keep that in mind and do the fundamentals well, consistently posting to a few social platforms, keeping your website updated, getting reviews, and sharing photos of real past work, you are already ahead of most businesses. AI does not replace that work. It rewards it.
Charlotte Life: Final thought?
Blair Witkowski: The future belongs to contractors who build trust, not tricks. I am just building the infrastructure that helps that trust show up everywhere people are searching.
